VINEYARD & WINERY
“Legend has it that Melisso or Melisséo, Cretan prince following Minos in Sicily, after the death of his king, takes up the sea and, beaten by the waves along the Calabrian-Ionian coast, arrives in that district, which from the colony he founded is precisely called Melissa. Here his subjects, dedicated to agriculture and already very experienced in the art of cultivating the vine, transform the countryside that is very fertile, into lush vineyards from which they obtain a very delicious wine for goodness and refinement, of taste.”
In Roman times Melissa returns to the headlines by Ovid who remembers her in the “Metamorphoses” as a pleasant place, rich in vineyards, not far from Crotone. Legend and history, therefore, that let us deduce that since very remote times, Melissa had a long tradition to which both the farmers and the Melissesi wine producers have remained faithful.
Over the decades Melissa wine achieves more and more flattering appreciation, so much so that the Bruni family, through the initiative and spirit of initiative of “Mario Bruni”, in 1934, for the first time produces a bottle of wine bearing the label “Melissa”. The wine is presented at the third national exhibition of agriculture in Florence, where it obtains the first official qualification diploma with a gold medal.
Thus began the rise on the market of the typical Melissa wine, which soon took on the denomination of D.O.C. wine.
Our vines suitable for the production of wine, are those traditionally cultivated in the production area, with particular attention to Gaglioppo. The estates are located in the countryside of Melissa and Carfizi.

ESTATE
The Bruni company is spread over an area of about 70 hectares, of which 16 are intended for the cultivation of vineyards. They are located in the locality called “Martorano” in the municipality of Carfizzi and in the locality called “La Sorbia” in the municipality of Melissa.
Vitigni
The training system adopted is mainly the spurred cordon. The yields vary from 55 to 90 quintals per hectare and the grape harvest is done manually. Three varieties of native vines are currently cultivated on the estate: Greco Bianco, Gaglioppo and Magliocco from which our “CIRO’ DOC” line is born. The other varieties of vines cultivated are: Malvasia, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Trebbiano, Pecorello and Mantonico. From the harvest and vinification of the grapes of these vines, our bottles of IGT Calabria “Nobili Melissesi” and “San Giu'” are produced, according to their characteristics. Our wines are produced exclusively with grapes of our own, harvested by hand and vinified with traditional and avant-garde methods.
